Shushing Face 🤫

🤫 is one of the most explicit emojis on the keyboard: its gesture — index finger on the mouth — leaves little room for ambiguity. It's used to ask for silence, to indicate that information must stay confidential, or to cut short a conversation venturing into territory you'd rather not address publicly. It's also used playfully to build complicity: "let's keep that between us 🤫."

Unlike 🙊, which expresses one's own silence on a topic, 🤫 is most often addressed to the other person: it's an instruction or an invitation to discretion, more than a simple description of one's own state.

Introduced to fill the absence of a gesture as universally recognizable as "shush" in the Unicode repertoire, 🤫 quickly found its place alongside other emojis expressing discretion and secrecy (🙊, 🤐), adding nuance to a register until then limited to less direct symbols.

🤫 typically accompanies the announcement of a secret ("I have a surprise for you 🤫"), a request for discretion before a surprise party, or a remark you'd rather keep between two people in a group. On social media, it teases an upcoming announcement without fully revealing it. It remains usable in a light professional setting, for example to discreetly announce good team news before its official communication.
