Many use it tongue-in-cheek to accept a task with feigned enthusiasm ("another 8am meeting? 🫡"), poking fun at the military discipline it evokes rather than literally embracing it. It can also express genuine gratitude toward someone — a respected authority figure, a colleague who just did you a favor — in a sense closer to a salute of tribute.

This double reading, sincere or ironic, depends almost entirely on the tone of the accompanying message: a simple "received 🫡" in reply to a work instruction reads very differently from a "yes sir 🫡" slipped in after an overly authoritative remark from a friend.

🫡 was added to give users a simple way to express formal acknowledgment or obedience, a register until then only indirectly suggested by emojis like 👍 or ✅. Its popularity quickly outgrew its literal use to become a very widespread ironic wink, notably for humorously commenting on situations of hierarchy or constraint.

🫡 is used to confirm receipt of an instruction in a half-serious, half-amused tone ("got it, I'll take care of it 🫡"), to ironically salute a superior's authority, or to mark sincere respect for a feat or a sacrifice.
