Skull and Crossbones ☠️

Originally, ☠️ is a warning pictogram: it appears on toxic product labels, deadly danger signs, or pirate symbols. But in everyday messaging use, it has taken on a meaning almost opposite to its grim origin: it expresses laughter so intense you're "dying" from it, in a wildly hyperbolic and unashamed way. This usage overlaps with 💀, with a slightly more "edgy" or knowing connotation, often used to mark a particularly absurd fit of laughter.

It keeps its literal meaning in specific contexts, though: danger signage, pirate symbols, or intentionally macabre references (Halloween, gothic aesthetics, video games). Context is what determines whether ☠️ should be read literally or ironically.

The skull and crossbones symbol predates the digital era by centuries: used for ages on poison bottles, pirate flags, and danger signage, it was integrated early into the Unicode standard as a universal warning pictogram, before being adopted by modern emoji keyboards and repurposed by the ironic usages of social media.

☠️ is used to react to something hilarious ("this meme finished me off ☠️"), to evoke a real or fictional danger (video games, pirate themes, Halloween), or to literally flag a deadly risk in a technical context. On social media, it mostly accompanies humor pushed to the extreme. It should be reserved for informal exchanges: its literal use (danger, poison), on the other hand, remains entirely appropriate in serious signage or documentation.
