Cold Face 🥶

The first use of 🥶 stays very literal: low temperature, icy wind, broken heating. It's used to express immediate physical discomfort, often with deliberate exaggeration to emphasize the complaint ("-10 degrees this morning, I'm 🥶").

But 🥶 goes well beyond weather. It's used to describe a distant welcome, a curt reply, or a tense social mood: someone who "is 🥶" toward a message stays cold, not very warm, almost hostile in how they reply. This reading joins the figurative sense of the word "cold" in French, applied to relationships rather than weather — a cold person, a cold welcome, a reply that casts a chill.

🥶 is also used, in comments and discussion threads, to salute a particularly cutting reply or a well-delivered "clash": the remark is so biting it becomes almost chilling for the targeted person, a use close to that of 💀 for hilarity, but applied to the impact of a punchline rather than laughter. This meaning, born from comments on videos and social media, has spread widely to the point of becoming a reflex for commenting on a well-aimed remark with no need to qualify it further.

Finally, like its opposite 🥵, it can punctuate a message to signal you're overwhelmed, overtaken, or uncomfortable in a situation, though this use remains a minority compared to the two dominant meanings: real cold and relational cold.

🥶 was designed at the same time as 🥵 to complete the repertoire of extreme physical sensations expressible by emoji, filling the absence of a simple way to represent intense cold. Its shift toward the social register — a distant welcome, a chilling punchline — then built up in the everyday use of messaging apps and social media, with no direct link to the symbol's initial intent.

🥶 accompanies a complaint about the weather ("not going out anymore, it's 🥶 outside"), comments on a distant welcome or reply ("they replied, but 🥶 the mood"), or salutes a particularly cutting remark in a conversation ("she replied that to him, straight 🥶"). It also appears to caption winter photos or snow sports.

In an informal professional setting, it can serve to comment on the weather with colleagues with no risk at all, but should be avoided to describe an actual coworker's attitude, where the negative connotation of "cold" could be poorly received.
