But its most widespread use in everyday conversations is notably more figurative: 👽 describes anything that seems strange, off, or totally out of the ordinary, with no link to an actual space reference. The image of the big-headed, big-black-eyed alien established itself in popular culture through numerous science-fiction works, well before becoming a standard emoji. This already universally recognized visual code allowed 👽 to keep a stable meaning, simply swinging between a literal reference to science fiction and a figurative use to designate strangeness or displacement.
