Hot Face 🥵

In its most direct sense, 🥵 describes hard-to-bear physical heat: a heatwave, an overheated room, intense physical effort. This is the most obvious literal use, matching exactly the depicted face.

But 🥵 has taken on a second meaning that's become extremely common: describing a person as attractive, in the sense of "hot." Saying someone is "🥵" in a photo amounts to saying they're sexy, in a more figurative, less direct register than a simple 😍. This use largely dominates comments under photos on social media, to the point that the original weather meaning almost takes a back seat in certain contexts.

Finally, French adds an extra nuance other languages don't necessarily have: the expression "c'est chaud" ("it's hot") describes a complicated, tense, or risky situation, independent of any temperature. 🥵 is thus also used to comment on a difficult exam, a tight deadline, or an electric atmosphere in a meeting, on the same principle as the spoken expression. This triple reading — real heat, attraction, tricky situation — makes 🥵 an emoji whose meaning is deduced almost entirely from the surrounding context, far more than from its appearance alone.

🥵 belongs to a family of emojis designed to express extreme physical sensations that classic faces didn't cover: suffocating heat, freezing cold, nausea. Its figurative use around physical attraction developed spontaneously in digital usage, with no link to the symbol's initial intent, in the manner of many emojis whose meaning gradually drifts from their literal appearance.

🥵 is used to complain about a high temperature ("it's 40 degrees, I can't take it anymore 🥵"), to comment on someone's appearance in a flattering tone ("she's 🥵 in this photo"), or to describe a tense or difficult situation ("the mood was 🥵 during the meeting"). On social media, it very frequently accompanies vacation or sports photos, where its meaning oscillates between real heat and a strong compliment.

In a professional setting, only the literal meaning (temperature, urgency) remains appropriate; the use tied to physical attraction should be strictly reserved for personal exchanges, where it can easily be perceived as out of place outside that context.
