Victory Hand ✌️

✌️ covers two close but distinct meanings: the victory sign, raised to celebrate a success or an achievement, and the peace sign, adopted as a pacifist symbol. In messages, it accompanies both the announcement of a passed exam and the simple wish that everything goes well for someone.

Its most widespread use, however, remains purely gestural: ✌️ has become the go-to pose for photos, particularly in selfies, where it adds a touch of lightness and spontaneity to the shot. This association is so strong in certain cultures, notably in East Asia, that the gesture has become an almost automatic reflex in front of a camera, more than a genuine message of peace or victory.

In conversations, it also serves as a polite way to close an exchange on a positive note, a bit like saying "take care" or "see you" at the end of a message, with no other particular meaning.

The V gesture has its roots in 20th-century movements: first associated with victory in a context of speeches and political communication, it was later reclaimed by pacifist movements as a peace sign. It gradually became, through global popular culture and particularly East Asian culture, an almost automatic photo gesture, largely detached from its original historical meanings.

✌️ is used to wish good luck ("good luck for the exam ✌️"), to announce a light, joyful departure ("heading off on vacation ✌️"), or simply to end a message on a positive note. It also appears almost systematically in photo captions, where it then has only a decorative, gestural value. Its register stays neutral enough to suit most informal contexts, including between colleagues.
