It's also found as a general marker of hope, with no religious connotation or direct thanks: it's added at the end of a message to signal that you're keeping your fingers crossed for a positive outcome, somewhat like 🤞. This versatility, far from hurting its popularity, actually explains why 🙏 remains one of the most used emojis across all generations: everyone projects onto it the nuance that suits them — thanks, hope, or spirituality — without this causing understanding problems in most exchanges.

The gesture of folded hands is a universal symbol that predates emojis by a long way, associated both with prayer in many religious traditions and with a respectful greeting in certain Asian cultures. Unicode included it early in its repertoire of gestures, and its official English name — evoking prayer — long fostered confusion with its current dominant use, which leans more toward thanks than spirituality.

🙏 is used to thank someone warmly ("thank you so much for your help 🙏"), to express sincere hope ("I hope the results will be good 🙏"), or to express support in the face of an ordeal experienced by a loved one. In a professional setting, it works well to thank a colleague or a client emphatically, remaining neutral enough not to seem out of place.
