This gesture also gave rise to a very widespread prank, notably in English-speaking cultures: if someone spots a 👌 discreetly formed below the waist by another person, they're "allowed" to give them a light punch on the arm. This circle game has spread widely through memes and remains one of the cultural references associated with this symbol.

It's worth staying cautious with this gesture in an international context, though: in some cultures, it can be perceived very differently from its Western sense of approval, even as an insult. This variability is real but hard to summarize reliably by country; as a precaution, it's best to avoid using it without knowing your counterpart's cultural context, particularly in international professional communication.

👌 is one of the very first hand gestures built into the emoji keyboard, at a time when the digital gestural vocabulary was limited to a few basic symbols.
