This symbol emerged as a roundabout way to display support when more explicit posts risked being moderated or censored on certain platforms. It's a contextual, political use, to be clearly distinguished from its most common, purely summery and gourmet use.

These two registers coexist today with no confusion: in a conversation about vacation or a recipe, 🍉 remains a simple refreshing fruit, while in a context of activist posting, it can carry this more recent symbolic meaning, identifiable mainly by those following the relevant news.

Its repurposing as a symbol of solidarity is a much more recent phenomenon, born on social media and specific to contemporary digital culture, with no link to the emoji's original intent at its creation.
