It's finally used to describe a complicated, ambiguous relationship, less conventional than classic love — an implied "I love you, but it's not simple," sometimes tinged with irony or self-deprecation. This ability to swing from sincere grief to dark humor, by way of a simple aesthetic preference, makes it a heart that must always be placed back in its context before being interpreted.

A color long associated with mourning in many Western cultures, black already carried a strong symbolic charge even before its adoption as an emoji. The black heart inherited an immediate funerary use from this, while quickly being repurposed by alternative aesthetics (gothic, minimalist, dark humor) that found in this color a neutral, elegant symbol detached from excessive sentimentality — a contrast that explains the coexistence of its two seemingly opposite uses.
