Tokyo Tower 🗼

Contrary to a very widespread belief, there's no emoji officially dedicated to the Eiffel Tower in the Unicode standard. The 🗼 character corresponds to the Japanese monument Tokyo Tower, a telecommunications tower built in Tokyo and directly inspired, in its silhouette, by the Eiffel Tower itself: the two structures share a very similar red-and-white metal lattice architecture. It's precisely this visual resemblance that explains the confusion: many French-speaking users spontaneously use it to evoke Paris, unaware that they're actually using the symbol of a Tokyo monument.

In everyday use, this confusion has practically no real consequence: whether the sender thinks "Eiffel Tower" or the recipient sees Tokyo instead, the message almost always gets across — the emoji works as a generic symbol for "iconic large metal tower," which the context of the conversation naturally orients toward Paris, Tokyo, or simply the idea of travel and an urban landmark.

Those who know the emoji's true identity, on the other hand, use it more precisely to evoke Japan, Tokyo, or Japanese culture in general — a less frequent but equally legitimate use, and paradoxically more faithful to its original Unicode meaning.

To this day, there's no Unicode emoji specifically representing the Eiffel Tower — despite regular requests from the community for its addition, the Parisian monument has never received a dedicated pictogram. The 🗼 character was originally designed to represent Tokyo Tower, a major Japanese monument whose silhouette recalls that of the Parisian tower it was itself architecturally inspired by.

In practice, 🗼 is very widely used to caption a travel photo in Paris ("finally in front of it 🗼") or to evoke a dream of a romantic getaway in the French capital, with the sender unaware of the gap with its official meaning. It also appears, more faithfully to its origin, to evoke a trip to Japan, the Tokyo skyline, or Japanese culture in general. In a professional context related to tourism or communication, it's best to keep this ambiguity in mind: if you're specifically targeting Paris, explicit text or the 🇫🇷 flag will remove any ambiguity; if you're targeting Japan, pairing 🗼 with 🇯🇵 immediately clarifies the intent.
