It naturally accompanies posts related to these themes — a Halloween costume, a fantasy reference, a discussion around a video game or board game involving magical characters.

Its most widespread use in everyday conversations, however, is figurative: someone whose skill in a specific field seems to border on magic because it far exceeds average is described as a "🧙". "The Excel mage" or "the coffee mage" describe, in a fond and often humorous tone, someone who masters a specific exercise with a disconcerting ease for others. This figure of the near-magical expert works in any field, from DIY to cooking to a complex piece of software.

This flattering use generally stays kind: unlike other double-meaning emojis, 🧙 has no mocking or negative connotation — it systematically values the person targeted, highlighting an envied skill rather than a flaw.

The figure of the mage or wizard, pointed hat and long robe, belongs to an old collective imagination, widely spread by popular tales then by modern fantasy literature and film.
