Locked 🔒

🔒 is used to signal that something is protected, secured, or confidential: a locked account, information kept private, restricted access. It's commonly used in digital contexts to evoke password security, personal data protection, or closing a profile to strangers.

More broadly, it also describes a relationship or a situation seen as stable and closed to the outside — a couple displaying its exclusivity, a small circle of friends, a decision definitively sealed. In this register, 🔒 conveys the idea that no outside intrusion is possible or desired.

It shouldn't be confused with 🔑, which conversely evokes access and opening: the closed padlock protects what the key would allow to open. The two work as mirrors, one signaling closure and protection, the other access and the possibility of unlocking.

The padlock is an old, universal symbol of security, used well before the digital era to protect physical belongings. Its adoption in the digital world happened naturally, notably through its use in web browsers to signal a secure connection, which reinforced its association with data protection and online confidentiality.

🔒 is used to signal that information stays confidential ("what happens here stays 🔒"), to evoke the security of an account or a system ("my data is well 🔒"), or to describe an exclusive, stable relationship. It also accompanies messages related to privacy or protecting sensitive content.

In a professional setting, it's naturally used to evoke computer security, document confidentiality, or restricted access, a clear, unambiguous use that spans all communication registers.
