On a fast connection, a test can use several hundred MB: prefer Quick mode on a mobile plan.

For a reliable measurement

Prefer an Ethernet cable, or stay close to the router on Wi-Fi.
Pause ongoing downloads, updates and streams.
A VPN or network blocker can lower the measured speeds.

About

Internet Speed Test

Measure your connection's latency, jitter and download and upload speeds to Cloudflare's test network, from your browser. Loaded latency reveals bufferbloat, and a per-use rating (4K streaming, video calls, gaming, remote work) sums up what your connection can do. Useful before an intensive work session or to diagnose slowness.

What it does

Latency (median of 20 samples, server processing removed) and chronological jitter
Download and upload over 4 parallel streams, TCP ramp-up ignored
Loaded latency (bufferbloat) and the Cloudflare server used
Per-use rating: browsing, 4K streaming, video calls, online gaming, remote work
Quick mode to save data, history of the last 5 tests in your browser

Frequently asked questions

How is speed measured?

Measurements run against Cloudflare's test network (speed.cloudflare.com), present in hundreds of cities. Latency is the median of 20 empty requests with server processing time removed; jitter is the average gap between successive samples. Speeds are measured over 4 parallel streams for about 8 seconds (4 in Quick mode), ignoring the first second of ramp-up.

Why do my results differ from my ISP's measurements?

ISP tests often measure against a server inside their own network. This test goes over the Internet, with routing, intermediate congestion and your browser's limits, so it better reflects real-world use. Wi-Fi and other connected devices also affect the result.

Are results saved?

The last 5 results are kept only in your browser so you can compare measurements; you can clear them at any time. Nothing is stored on our servers.

How much data does the test use?

It depends on your speed: a few dozen MB on a slow connection, several hundred MB on fiber. The volume actually used is shown at the end of the test; Quick mode roughly halves it.
